Wild
Life sanctuaries are vast and extensive in the south
Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka
and Kerala. The forests of South India survive mainly
along the Western Ghats, a range of fairly high hills
that run parallel to the west coast of India.
In the arid interior
of Andhra Pradesh are pockets of dry deciduous forests.
The largest Tiger Reserve in the country is
to be found here.
Far from the city noise
and pollution, lies a calm, peaceful protected area
all by itself. It is the home to some very very rare
animals and birds.
The Bandipur National
Park is one of the most fascinating wild-life
centers. Established in 1931 by the Mysore Maharajhas,
this park is nestled in the foothills of the Nilgiris.
The park can be explored
by road or you can go on elephant back. The Sound
of silence is everwhere and one can hear the wind
gushing through the trees, animals calling out to
each other. It is because of this peace and tranquility
that the spot here was chosen as the centre for the
Project Tiger. And since then the Tiger
population has almost doubled.
Apart from the tiger
one can see Peafowl, patridges, quail,
hornbill, giant squirrel, wild dog,
elephants, sambar, barking deer.
The trees sheltering them come in all shapes and sizes
including the more beautiful. Teak, rosewood, honne,
mathi, bamboo and sandal.
Tiger
is our natural heritage. Do not kill tigers. We
do not want to lose our heritage
