The
thickly forested foothills of the Himalayas,
in the state of Uttar Pradesh, are generally referred
to as the Terai. Two internationally renowned
tiger havens are located here which provide an unforgettable
wildlife experience.
The Dudhwa National
Park which is a Tiger Reserve located in the district
of Lakhimpur Kheri, very close to the Nepal
border. The 500 sq.km. Park has fine sal forests
and extensive grassland.
The jungle is covered
with tall grass making it ideal tiger country.
The wetland areas of the park consist of small water
holes, swamps and rivulets. These are the
habitat of large members of barasingha, the
magnificent swamp deer, noted for their multi-twined
antlers (bara singha). These in turn support the
carnivores like the tiger and leopard.
Though the Park has a fair population of tigers,
they are rarely seen owing to the thick forest cover.
Other inhabitants include the sloth bear, jackal,
wild pig and the smaller cats the fishing
cat, leopard cat, jungle cat and
the civet. A large variety of birds can also
be seen at Dudhwa. Its marshes are home to
a range of both local and migratory water-birds .
There are spectacular painted storks, black
and white necked storks, sarus cranes and
varied night birds of prey, ranging from the
great Indian horned owl to the jungle owlet.
Colourful woodpeckers, barbets, kingfishers,
minivets, bee eaters, and bulbuls
fly through the forest canopy.
Dhdhwa is a true tiger
country and encountering the big cat here gives you
trill of a life time
Tiger
is fighting for its survival. Let it live
