The
Himalayas have attracted people from all over the
world who come to conquer the great peaks and explore
the valleys. They are the highest mountain ranges
in the world and home to some of the highest peaks
on the earth. The habitat and vegetation here varies
with altitude and ranges from the tropical and sub
tropical forests of the foothills, the temperature
forests and alpine meadows of the higher reaches,
to the high altitude deserts in Kashmir and Himachal
Pradesh. Wild life too changes as the climate and
altitude changes
The largest protected
national park in Himachal Pradesh, the park
is carved out of the splendid mountain terrain of
the Kullu district. Rich coniferous
forests, alpine meadows blooming with flowers.
Snow-capped mountain peaks and glaciers
provide a breathtaking view of the Park. The secluded
Sainj and Tirthan valleys harbour a
variety of animals common to this area. These are
wild mountain goats like the bharal,
goral, and serow, the brown bear
and predators like the leopard and the
rare and the elusive snow leopard. Varieties
of colourful pheasants like monal, khalij
cheer, tragopan and other Himalayan
birds are part of its rich bird population. Trekking
through the Park to Rakte Sar, the origin of
the Sainj River, brings in the added pleasure
of seeing wildlife in this spectacular natural environment.
Deforestation
leads to soil erosion and flooding.
Stop cutting the forests.
