Located
in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh
in Central India, the Kanha National Park is
a Tiger Reserve that extends over 1945 sq.km of high
and low lying arreas. Made immortal by the world famous
author, Rudyard Kipling in his famous book,
The Jungle Book. A river meander's through Kanha's
central grassland that cover the extensive plateaus.
Steep rocky highpoints along its edges gives a breathtaking
views of the valleys below.
The
grasslands at Kanha covered with forests of
sal, are teeming with varieties of wild life
like deer, chital (spotted deer),
chousingha, nilgai, the majestic
gaur (Indian bison) and wild boar. This
is 'tiger country ideal for viewing both the
hunter and the hunted.
Tiger
is a protected species ever since scientists started
conducting studies on this rare and elusive Big
Cat. Another landmark at Kanha is the preservation
of the 'hard ground' barasingha the only surviving
population of this Central Indian subspecies of deer.
This was achieved by extending the grasslands, relocating
villages and by increasing the habitat.
The
best way to explore Kanha is on elephant back.
The open country makes the sighting of wild life very
good. Deer are seen along the grasslands and
gaur at Bamhnidadar or in the Bishanpura Sondhar-Ghorella
area of the Mukki range. This area is also ideal for
spotting the dhole or the Indian wild dog.
Langurs, wild boar, water fowl
and birds are also commonly seen.
Tiger
is a protected animal. Trading in tiger skin, toger
bones is a punishable offence. Protect the Tiger,
preserve our heritage
