The
great one horned Indian Rhino which roamed
the northern Indian plains, is now limited to only
two wild reserve sanctuaries of India, The Kaziranga
National Park and the Manas National Park.
The other country where it is found is Nepal.
Due to its easy accesibility,
Kaziranga National Park is is most visited
by the wild life enthusiasts. Lying along the mighty
Brahmaputra River, the Park covers an area
of about 430 Sq km. Its swamps and grasslands with
tall thickets of elephant grass and evergreen forest,
support the largest number of rhino population
in the subcontinent. Rhino has been hunted
to extinction because of its horn. This led to the
conservation of this area in 1926. In 1940, Kaziranga
was declared a sanctuary. Though poaching still constitutes
a major threat to the rhino population, the
numbers of this species are on the rise.
Due to the open country
wildlife viewing is fairly easy. A day spent in the
park is often sufficient for visitors to see most
of the wild life here. Tourist go on Elephant back
at dawn. This is the best time to view the wild life.
One can see herds of barasingha and wild
buffalo in the marshes. This is also home to one
of the most dangerous and ferocious herbivore, the
Indian wild buffalo. It is an impressive animal
and weighs upto a ton. The Rhinos, now used
to tourists, browse unconcernedly as the visitors
pass by. An occasional herd of elephants or
wild boar can also sighted. The grasslands
are home to a number of birds of prey like the crested
serpent eagle, the fishing eagle and greyheaded
fishing eagle. All of them can be seen circling
over the marshes. The water bird variety includes
swamp partridge, bar headed goose, whistling
teal, the Bengal florican, storks,
herons and even pelicans.
Kaziranga is so close
to nature that a visit to the National Park can be
a rich and a fullfilling experience.
Rhino
is a protected species. Poaching and killing of Rhino
is a punishable offence. Save
the Rhino from extinction
