The great one horned Indian Rhino which roamed the northern Indian plains, is now limited to only two wild reserve sanctuaries of India, The Kaziranga National Park and the Manas National Park. The other country where it is found is Nepal.

Manas National Park, due to its remoteness is less frequented by tourist. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas near Bhutan, it is great eco system and supports a big variety of wild life. The Manas River flowing through the Park demarcates the border between India and Bhutan. The Park has vast deciduous forests where the thick canopy of forest often cuts out the light. Its wet grasslands are the home of the Rhino, water buffalo, elephant and the tiger.

It is also famous for its population of the rare golden langur - found only in this part of the country. They are often spotted on the tall trees swinging, playing and feeding. Other primates in the Park include the capped langur, Assamese macaque, the slow loris and the hoolock gibbon. These are rarely seen but the whoooping call of the hoolock gibbon can be heard throughout the forest. The Reserve is also home to the attractive and rare red panda. These are only seen occasionally and that too in the higher regions of the park. Manas has become a very special ecosystem, as it harbours twenty species of rare and endangered birds and animals. These include the hispid hare and the pigmy hog. The lush forest canopy at Manas shelters colourful birds like the giant hornbills, both pied and grey varieties, pheasants, jungle fowl and scarlet minivet. The water birds along the rivers include brahminy ducks, mergansers and a range of egrets, herons and pelicans. Over 2840 sq.km in area, Manas is a fascinating Rhino reserve.

A visit to this remote nature reserve can be a funfilled and an exciting experience
