Apart
from her enormous natural beauty, India's wildlife
is her most magnificent natural heritage. It has a
virtually unmatched diversity of Flora Fauna. India
has over 400 parks and sanctuaries which are
declared as protected areas. Of these very few are
visited by the tourists due to lack of basic infrastructure,
location and climatic conditions. Many parks and sanctuaries
are of outstanding natural beauty, with a fairly
healthy population of wild animals and rare species
of birds, mammals. Wildlife watching in India is more
of an adventure than fun. At times, the sightseeing
of endangered animals may take days, while for very
lucky ones, one visit to the Park can be a chance
of a life time to view the rare and the elusive tiger
and other endangered species. Unlike wild life sanctuaries
in other countries where wild life can be viewed easily,
Game viewing in India can be an exciting or a disappointing
experience.
Under
Project Tiger and with the support of International
Organisations, the population growth of Tiger reached
has seen a positive growth in the past decade. But
poaching still continues although the government is
taking steps to prevent it. The other endangered species
which are seen at these parks are - leopard, chital,
sambar, nilgai, wild bull, wild boar, chinkara, 12
horned antelope, wild elephants, wild dog, barking
deer, jackal, wild cat, Asiatic Lions (Sasangir
only), dhol, black faced langur, rhesus monkey,
gharial, crorodiles and the great one horned Indian
rhino (only in Kaziranga and Manas).
Besides
these there are rare species of migratory as well
as local birds found in most of the parks. The famous
among them are pelicans, cranes, multicolored macaques,
eagles, king fisher, the great Indian Bustard,
osprey, peacocks, jungle fowls, heron, wild ducks,
mynah, hornbill, humming birds, fly catcher. These
birds nest here during winter months when they come
from upper colder regions to breed and spend the winters
in India.
A
visit ot these parks will give you a deep insight
into our wild life heritage. Some of our most pouplar
wild life parks are:
